Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to pay to publish the series?
No. The stories, photos and paginated pages are free of charge to any newspaper.
In what format is the series available?
The series is available as a set of stories and photos that you can use anyway you'd like. You can run all of the stories in a single section, or use them in a series on consecutive days.
The series is also available in a fully paginated, full-color broadsheet section. We provide you with QuarkXPress files for the 16-page section, along with .jpg or .eps image files for each photo in the section. You can run the section exactly as it is, or you can change elements of it to make it match your newspaper's style. Or, if you prefer, you can download high-resolution CMYK PDF versions of the pages.
What is the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's relationship to the series?
This series has been funded by an independent organization -- The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation -- that has a point of view about health and health-care issues. The series was conceived, produced and coordinated by Public Access Journalism, LLC, an independent editorial consulting group that examines public policy issues for newspaper readers.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, based in Princeton, N.J., is the nation's largest philanthropy devoted exclusively to health and health care. A grant from the foundation was used to pay salaries for the series project director, project coordinator and journalists; help set up a public Web site (www.silenttreatment.info); and provide information to help community groups.
The URL for the foundation's Web site is http://www.rwjf.org. The foundation's address is P.O. Box 2316, College Road East and Route 1, Princeton, N.J. 08543-2316. Its phone number is (888) 631-9989.
The series was edited and distributed by McClatchy-Tribune Information Services. MCT also designed a paginated reprint of the series for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and was paid a fee for that service by Public Access Journalism, LLC.
How can I download the stories in the series?
All parts of the series -- stories, photos, series logo and paginated pages -- are available on this Web site.
To download the stories, visit http://www.mctdirect.com/treatment/stories.htm. There, you'll see a story budget that lists each story in the series. (There are five main stories, each accompanied by several sidebars.) On the budget, you can click on individual links to download each story.
Or, you can download the entire package of stories in one click. To do this, click "Download entire story package" at the top of the page.
How can I download the photos in the series?
To download the photos, visit http://www.mctdirect.com/treatment/photos.htm. There, you'll see each of the photos in the series. Click on the link next to each photo to download it in .jpg format.
Can you tell me more about the paginated pages?
The series is available in a fully paginated, full-color broadsheet section. We provide you with QuarkXPress files for the 16-page section, along with .jpg or .eps images files for each photo in the section. You can run the section exactly as it is, or you can change elements of it to make it match your newspaper's style. Or, if you prefer, you can download high-resolution CMYK PDF versions of the pages.
Visit http://www.mctdirect.com/treatment/pages.htm to download the pages. When you click "Quark" you'll download a compressed file, which you can open, or "unstuff," using free decompression software. (Download StuffIt Expander for free at http://www.stuffit.com/expander/index.html.)
When you unstuff the file, you'll have a folder that contains a Quark file of the broadsheet section. You'll also have a dozen or so .jpg and .eps files of the photos in the section.
All of the text in the paginated section uses standard fonts like Helvetica and Times. If you wish, you may change the text in the section to match your newspaper's style. However, be aware that changing font styles or sizes may change the way the text fits on the page.
If you have questions about to use the paginated section, call the McClatchy-Tribune Special Sections department at (202) 383-6151 or e-mail krt-onepages@krtinfo.com.
Is there a URL that I can provide for readers who want more information?
Yes. Readers should visit www.silenttreatment.info. There, they will find copies of the stories, resources, Web chats and more. Please do not tell readers to visit the MCT Direct URL -- that is meant as a distribution site for editors, not a resource for readers.
My newspaper wants to localize the stories. Can you help with that?
Yes. A resource list for editors and reporters moved on the wire (slugged TOOLKIT) and is available at www.mctdirect.com/treatment/contacts.htm. It lists dozens of organizations that can speak to the issues addressed in the series.
