Over the past 15 years, studies have offered striking new research on the genetic patterns of addiction, leading to new medications, connected services and increasing recognition of addiction as a chronic disease. Still, of the more than 22 million Americans addicted to alcohol and drugs, nine out of 10 don't find their way to readily available treatment for reasons that include denial, shame, expense and an often fatal misunderstanding of the disease that holds them in its grip.
"Silent Treatment" will detail the efforts to bring addiction out of the shadows, focusing on programs and people who are helping make treatment more accessible and effective. Accompanying each story will be sidebars containing state-of-the-art tips, resources and guides for readers.
The stories, accompanying photos and paginated pages are distributed by McClatchy-Tribune Information Services. The series is produced in partnership with Public Access Journalism, LLC, an independent editorial company.
All stories are written for PAJ by former or current journalists from McClatchy newspapers, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. MCT will move bios of each reporter for use as background or for publication with the series.
This exclusive series is underwritten by the The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the nation's largest philanthropy devoted exclusively to health and health care. A grant from the foundation was used to pay salaries for the series project director, project coordinator and journalists; help set up a public Web site (www.silenttreatment.info); and provide information to help community groups.
